Ontario Ice Fishing Rules
Ice Fishing Essentials in Ontario: Rules, Registration, and Safety Tips
To ice fish in Ontario, you’ll need a valid fishing license and must adhere to local fishing regulations. Ice huts must be registered in specific Fisheries Management Zones (FMZs 9-12, 14-20), and your registration number should be visibly displayed on your hut.

Fishing Seasons: Ontario doesn’t have specific ice fishing seasons—just general fishing seasons. The type of fishing—ice, boat, or shore—depends on local conditions.
Ice Fishing Lines: You can use two lines if you stay within 60 meters of them and have a clear view at all times. Mechanical spring devices for setting hooks are not allowed within 30 meters of waters.
Ice Hut Registration: Huts made of materials other than fabric must be registered. Fabric tents larger than 7 m2 also require registration. Registration is free and can be done online or at ServiceOntario locations.
Permits: Special licenses are required for commercial activities on Lake Nipissing. Additional permits may be needed for huts in provincial parks.
Ice Hut Removal: Huts must be removed by specific dates, depending on their location. This is a safety measure to ensure all huts are removed before ice melts.
